We made a video of the experience if you would like to watch this first: High speed Media Player Video Partnering with a Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, a group from our church here in Terre Haute went down to assist in the reconstruction from hurricane Katrina. Christ Fellowship provided housing and two meals a day to assist with groups making the trip down for reconstruction. The first work day started with a drive first for supplies, then on to Pascagoula Mississippi to begin working on the first house. Since a couple of feet of water or more had visited almost all the homes there most families were living in FEMA provided trailers. You immediately noticed most of the homes were missing dry wall from 4 feet down, and most were in major need of repair. Not talking about a few homes here, I'm talking about the whole city. This 5 + months after the storm. Mostly we installed insulation and dry wall on day one, and began the process of taping and mudding the dry wall seams. Day two involved finishing up the dry wall insulation and continued mudding and sanding. We ended up splitting into three groups so we could work on three separate homes. The later part of day two and most of day three for me was sanding and painting. We took a side tour of Gulfport Mississippi while we were on lunch break on day two. Must admit that was very educational seeing the destruction along the coast on highway 90. It was very bleak so I can only imagine what it looked like immediately after the storm hit. One thing is for certain, years will be involved in reconstruction of these areas. Our church has sent down 4 separate teams so far over the course of the winter, and more scheduled for later this spring. In some ways you feel like you are just scratching the surface, but after watching Carla light up after we finished dry walling her home, it no doubt made a difference.
